Top 5 Highest Grossing Films for Weekend of July 15-17, 2022
5. Elvis ($8 million)
4. Top Gun: Maverick ($12.3 million)
3. Where the Crawdads Sing ($17.3 million)
2. Minions: The Rise of Gru ($26.8 million)
1. Thor: Love and Thunder ($46.6 million)

This past weekend was a quiet one at movie theaters, with no particularly groundbreaking film premieres. Crime drama “Where the Crawdads Sing”, based on the novel of the same name, had the most successful debut of this weekend; the film made it to the number-three spot, lagging nearly $10 million behind Illumination’s “Minions: Rise of Gru”, which has become the biggest animated movie of the summer! Meanwhile, “Where the Crawdads Sing” has received mixed reviews from critics, who found its tone to be inconsistent.

Other new releases this weekend included Paramount’s “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank”, which came in at number six with $6.3 million. This tale of a beagle who trains to become a samurai boasts an A-list cast that includes Michael Cera, Samuel L. Jackson, Ricky Gervais, Mel Brooks, and George Takei. It’s loosely based on Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles“, but unlike that movie, “Paws of Fury” has received mixed reviews from critics for its so-so animation, unoriginal story, and lackluster humor. Some have even noted that with all the references to “Blazing Saddles”, it’s unclear who the target audience is: is it actually for kids, or is it more for their parents?
