The Dark Tale of Gretel & Hansel

Gretel&Hansel Featured Image

Gretel & Hansel tells the dark story of a sister and her brother going into a dark forest and finding nothing but evil. Gretel and Hansel is based off the storybook of almost the same name, Hansel & Gretel. The movie is directed by Osgood “Oz” Perkins, the director of The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. The movie stars Sophia Lillis (It, HBO’s Sharp Objects), newcomer Sammy Leakey, Alice Krige (Amazon’s Carnival Row), Jessica De Gouw (WGN’s Underground, The CW’s Arrow) and Charles Babalola (The Legend of Tarzan). Written by Rob Hayes and produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Sinister, Upgrade) and Fred Berger (La La Land, Destroyer), the movie promises to be absolutely terrifying.

Sophia Lillis as Titular Gretel

The premise of the film closely follows the story in the original book. In a fairytale countryside a young girl takes her brother into the woods to find food and work. What they find in the woods, however, is nothing but a horrifying experience. The siblings find nothing in the woods but a witch who seems kind and feeds them, but with terrible ulterior motives. The movie will more than likely show the lengths the siblings will have to go through to survive.

Gretel & Hansel will bring terror back from the original story seeing that people understand the dire situation in the film. From the discovery of the witch’s abode to their daring escape. These things were all in the original story, and hopefully will be seen properly on the screen. This movie is one that will either be very interesting or disappointing. Everyone can find out exactly which one it will be when the movie releases nationwide on January 31, 2020.
