Sony Pictures Classics’ ‘The Last Vermeer’

There are a lot of independent films out in the world constantly being made, including ones with well known actors. Sony Pictures Classics produces and distributes all kinds of independent films that have been seen at film festivals already. ‘The Last Vermeer’ has premiered at the Telluride Film Festival already and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for distribution in the United States. This film was filmed primarily in the Netherlands and is executively produced by Ridley Scott based off of screenplay by James McGee and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby.

            ‘The Last Vermeer’ is a film that tells the story of Dutch folk hero Han Van Meegeren. He was a man who was responsible for swindling millions of dollars out of the Nazis during the time of WWII. He succeeded in doing this by convincing them that they were buying paintings done by Johannes Vermeer. In reality, these paintings were done by Meegeren himself in order to get back at them and make money while he was at it. This plan of his and the success of the venture made him considered the most successful art forger of all time.           

The Last Vermeer

This film was originally known as the ‘Lyrebird,’ but recently it was changed to ‘The Last Vermeer.’ The movie stars Guy Pearce, Claes Bang, Vicky Krieps, and Roland Møller. ‘The Last Vermeer’ was directed by Dan Friedkin who also originally produced the film alongside Ryan Friedkin. With Sony Pictures Classics’ acquisition of the distribution rights for the movie the movie will have a theatrical release here in the States. As of now, the theatrical release date for the movie is May 22, 2020.
