Sonic the Hedgehog's Record-Breaking Opening

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ managed to have a very strong opening weekend, especially for a video game movie. Video game movies are known to not do well both plot wise and box office wise. This one, however, managed to do pretty well, having brought in a total of $57 million this past weekend. Jeff Fowler, the director took to social media in order to thank people for making this past weekend the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie.

The previous record holder for such a release was Detective Pikachu, which managed to gross $54.3 million in its opening weekend. With President’s Day grosses added in, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, starring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, managed to gross $70 million. While the critical response ended up being mixed, the general audience response was pretty good considering how many seats were sold. We’ll see if the trend continues this weekend as well.
