The Academy Awards, best known as the Oscars, has many different awards that are given that are tied to the best movies of the past year. There are a lot of important details that go into making an incredible movie. We have already gone through the nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature Film, and Best Cinematography. Now we are going to go into the category of nominations for the Best Costume Design.
The first nomination in the category for Best Costume Design is for the movie, The Irishman. More specifically the nominees are Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson for their costume designs. The designers did an excellent job replicating the outfits worn by mobsters during the time the film takes place. There is not a single costume that feels out of place for this film.
After The Irishman, we have the historical comedy Jojo Rabbit which shows us a lonely German boy’s world being turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. In order to make the movie feel like an authentic timepiece, the costumes need to fit the period. Costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo did just that and it immerses you in the movie to keep you entertained.
Moving on, we have the movie that is most likely to win a couple of awards, the biggest of all being Best Picture. That movie would be Joker, and it has incredible costume designs to go with its intricate characters. The person behind all of those designs is Mark Bridges, without whom the movie wouldn’t portray the characters the way they were.
Next up, we have a movie that was adapted from a novel and it is a movie that is a period piece. So, in order to be immersed in the movie and experience the time period, the costumes must fit it perfectly. Jacqueline Durran did just that and the hard work is shown on screen when we see the people on screen appearing just as they would at that time.
Finally, the last movie that we are taking a look at on the nomination list is Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. There seems to be a bit of a trend on the list of nominations for Best Costume Design. They are all movies that take place in older time periods. Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood is set strongly at the end of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Thus, we end up with clothing that perfectly emulates the time period and makes the world feel like how it was at the end of the 60’s. The designer of which is Arianne Phillips.
First of all, Sony Pictures Classics is a company that distributes, produces and acquires specialty films such as documentaries, independent films, and art films. They do all of this in the United States and even internationally. As such, they are distributing Charm City Kings while the producers of the film are Overbrook Entertainment, run by Will Smith, James Lassiter, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Charm City Kings is unique in that it is a film adaption of the documentary 12 O’Clock Boys. It is directed by Angel Manuel Soto, from a screenplay by Sherman Payne, from a story by Kirk Sullivan, Chris Boyd, and Barry Jenkins. The movie stars Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Meek Mill, Will Catlett, Teyonah Parris, Donielle Tremaine Hansley, and Kezii Curtis.
Charm City Kings tells the story of a young man called Mouse and his attempts to fit in. Mouse (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) desperately wants to join Baltimore’s infamous Midnight Clique, a fearless group of dirt bike riders who rule the summertime streets. When Midnight’s leader, Blax (Meek Mill), takes 14-year-old Mouse under his wing, Mouse soon finds himself torn between the straight-and-narrow and a road filled with fast money and violence. Charrm City Kings will make its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2020. It is scheduled to be released everywhere else on April 10, 2020, by Sony Pictures Classics.
Without good cinematography, a movie would not be entertaining to watch at all. The movies with the best cinematography are always remembered for that. Thus, there is an award for the movie with the very best cinematography and we are going to go through the nominations. We have also already covered the nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Animated Feature.
The first nomination is already on a few other nomination lists, and that is The Irishman. This epic tells the story of World War II vet Frank Sheeran reflects on his life as a hustler and mob hitman, working alongside many notorious figures, including Jimmy Hoffa, the subject of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history. The way that the cinematography is done makes it all feel more realistic.
Following up on the list is another movie with multiple nominations going for it. Joker sees a comic steadily losing his hold on reality and slowly descending into madness. The movie has already been praised for the incredible acting of Joaquin Phoenix and the story of the film as well. To add to it, the cinematography is one of the things that helped to get it nominated for Best Picture in the first place.
The third film on the nomination list is a movie called The Lighthouse, starring Robert Pattinson and Willem DeFoe. The Lighthouse sees two troubled lighthouse keepers confront epic storms and personal demons on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. The visuals seen throughout the film give us a sense of what the descent into madness for the two men is like.
Following that we have the movie 1917. The premise of which is that during World War I, two British soldiers are sent on a dangerous mission to stop an attack by the British 7th Division that will result in a massacre by the Germans. Their assignment takes on extra urgency as one of the young soldiers’ brothers is fighting in that Division. The goal of the cinematography in this movie is to, of course, make us experience WWI through the eyes of soldiers who lived it.
The last nominee for best cinematography is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood. In the movie, we see Los Angeles in 1969, and aging TV star Rick Dalton and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth struggle to make their way around an industry and a city they hardly recognize anymore. With excellent cinematography we properly experience the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

The first nominee for best animated feature is How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. This is the last movie in the trilogy and it sees Hiccup and Toothless as the kings of a dragon/viking kingdom. They must find a new home for their family, but it could tear them apart forever.
Next on the list is a film called I Lost My Body. It sees adventure, young love and childhood memories intertwine as a severed hand crosses Paris in search of its owner. I Lost My Body is a stylized film that tells a unique story of a young man meeting a young woman told in an interesting way.
Following that movie, we have the movie Klaus. Klaus tells the story of a selfish young postman is assigned to a remote Scandinavian town, his unlikely friendship with a reclusive toymaker leads to the creation of Santa Claus. With a unique animation style and an interesting story, Klaus has managed to be nominated.
Up next, on the list of nominations is the movie Missing Link. Mr. Link, aka Bigfoot, is lonely and believes that famed investigator of myths Sir Lionel Frost is the one man who can help him. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, Mr. Link and Frost embark on an epic journey to find Mr. Link’s distant relatives, and their own true identities, in the fabled Shangri-La.
The last movie to find its way onto the list is Toy Story 4. Woody and the gang go on a road trip with new toy Forky, who’s convinced he’s trash and doesn’t yet understand his role in the world. Along the way, Woody is unexpectedly reunited with independent spirit Bo Peep and finds himself faced with a decision, and a future, he never imagined. The Toy Story series has been going strong for years and this continues that tradition.
First of all, for those who are unaware, Emma was originally a comedy written by the novelist Jane Austen. The premise of the novel, being the same as the film, is a young upper class socialite spends her free time trying to meddle in the romantic relationships of her friends and family. In playing matchmaker, however, she ends up causing all sorts of trouble for the people she cares about. This also isn’t the first time that novel has been adapted to film. The novel was adapted twice in the same year of 1996, one for theatrical release starring Gwyneth Paltrow, and a TV movie adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale. This upcoming adaptation plays off of the plot the same way that the two previous films did.
Emma tells the story of Emma Woodhouse, a woman that has no real equal in her sleepy little town. She must navigate the trials of romance when she misguidedly tries to play matchmaker, and she ends up just being meddlesome. The film takes place in Georgian- and Regency-era England and is meant to be a satire of social class at the time. The movie is supposed to also show us the pains of having to grow up and the missteps that are inevitably going to be there. The biggest question is whether or not Emma can figure out what true romance should be like.
Emma is being directed by Autumn de Wilde, and while this may be her first film, she has done photography work that has made its way into magazines such as Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Times. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Bill Nighy, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Rupert Graves, Gemma Whelan, Amber Anderson, Tanya Reynolds, and Connor Swindells. The producers of the movie are Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin. For anyone who wants to go and see the newest adaptation of Emma, the movie releases theatrically on February 21, 2020.
1. Bad Boys for Life
Coming up first, having had an incredible opening weekend, is Bad Boys for Life with $59.2 million, making that its current gross amount.
2. Dolittle
Dolittle was a little underwhelming by comparison, but it still managed to bring in $22.5 million, which is also its gross amount.
3. 1917
1917 has continued to do pretty well at the box office this weekend having made $22.1 million, bringing its gross total to $76.8 million.
4. Jumanji: The Next Level
Jumanji: The Next Level is starting to fall off now in its sixth week at $9.6 million, which brings the grand amount to $270.5 million.
5. Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise of Skywalker
The Rise of Skywalker, in its fifth week, has definitely fallen off by bringing in $8.4 million. This still brings the gross amount to $492 million.
6. Just Mercy
Just Mercy raked in $6 million this past weekend, bringing the gross income of the film to $19.6 million.
7. Little Women
Little women follows closely behind, managing to bring in $5.9 million, bringing gross income for the film to $84.4 million.
8. Knives Out
Knives Out still remains on the top ten list at the end of its second month; having brought in $4.3 million, bringing it up to a grand total of $146 million.
9. Like a Boss
Like a Boss has not done well so far, as in just its second week, it brought in $3.8 million. This brings its total to only $16.9 million, but at its second week, it still has time to recoup the costs a bit.
10. Frozen II
Frozen II finishes at the bottom of the list again, but this is its 9th week since release. It brought in $3.7 million which brings its gross amount to $464.9 million.
