There are a lot of independent films out in the world constantly being made, including ones with well known actors. Sony Pictures Classics produces and distributes all kinds of independent films that have been seen at film festivals already. ‘The Last Vermeer’ has premiered at the Telluride Film Festival already and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for distribution in the United States. This film was filmed primarily in the Netherlands and is executively produced by Ridley Scott based off of screenplay by James McGee and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby.
‘The Last Vermeer’ is a film that tells the story of Dutch folk hero Han Van Meegeren. He was a man who was responsible for swindling millions of dollars out of the Nazis during the time of WWII. He succeeded in doing this by convincing them that they were buying paintings done by Johannes Vermeer. In reality, these paintings were done by Meegeren himself in order to get back at them and make money while he was at it. This plan of his and the success of the venture made him considered the most successful art forger of all time.
This film was originally known as the ‘Lyrebird,’ but recently it was changed to ‘The Last Vermeer.’ The movie stars Guy Pearce, Claes Bang, Vicky Krieps, and Roland Møller. ‘The Last Vermeer’ was directed by Dan Friedkin who also originally produced the film alongside Ryan Friedkin. With Sony Pictures Classics’ acquisition of the distribution rights for the movie the movie will have a theatrical release here in the States. As of now, the theatrical release date for the movie is May 22, 2020.
So, obviously the Coronavirus is no laughing matter and it is a worldwide issue that has a lot of attention circulating around it. That is for a good reason since the virus is a deadly one that, as of now, will continue to spread. That is not to say there will not be a look into a vaccine, but people need to be much more careful right now so as not to accidently end up with the virus. The most recent film in the James Bond Series, ‘No Time to Die’ was pushed back for this exact reason.
Despite the delay for the newest James Bond film, Disney and Universal have already confirmed that their newest releases will not be delayed. ‘Black Widow’ and ‘F9’ are both set to release in May and are, of course two massive money-makers for the two companies. The fact that the two movies aren’t being pushed back just means that in the meantime in the near future, everyone is going to have to be just a little bit more careful when they go out to the movies.
The Coronavirus is something that people should definitely be on the lookout for and is a better reason than ever for people to be hygienic right now. Whether the pushing of the Bond film is for some monetary reason regarding panic or if it is to try and keep the virus from spreading, we won’t truly know. However, it is better that there is, at least for now, one less way for it to spread. Please, just heed this warning though to be careful of your surroundings, because if the virus can be slowed down and stopped, these things may not have to happen again in the future.
In case the name sounds familiar, Jason Blum is the founder and CEO of the eponymous Blumhouse Productions. This production company is responsible for the creation of a number of horror films, with the most recent being ‘The Invisible Man.’ With the success of the movie, Blum wants to put his efforts into making a Frankenstein movie. That company has a track record for making movies that end up doing surprisingly well, but not as well critically.
Recently however, we got a movie that grossed relatively well on its opening weekend and it is a remake that no one expected much from. Of course the next step after creating a well received remake of a classic horror film is to make more of them. Now, we reach the topic of discussion which is of course Frankenstein. Frankenstein is one of the original monster movies with an incredible story backing it. Movies involving Frankenstein’s monster have been well received over the years, making the idea of a new movie a pretty good idea.
Jason Blum and his team are responsible for giving people an entirely new age of horror cinema to go out and view. Like many, there are a lot of films of his that have not done as well as expected. However, he has managed to produce series such as ‘The Purge’ and ‘Insidious’ that people will watch over and over for years to come. With that in mind, a Blumhouse-produced Frankenstein might be what the horror icon needs to make him at the top of horror films again.

Although I am a little late to the party when it comes to seeing ‘1917,’ I finally managed to go see the movie. Let me just say right off the bat that I thought that the movie was fantastic and deserves the praise that it gets. There is not a doubt in my mind that the film was something that a large number of people put their hearts into. Later in this review of the movie there are sure to spoilers, so be on the lookout.
‘1917’ is a film that does more than show us the grittiness of WWI, it shows the reality of what the war was like. For instance, in the movie, we see the two main characters played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman fighting their way through the battlefield, but most of the time all is quiet. There are only a few moments throughout the movie where there is actual fighting, but the rest is eerily familiar in a sense. Throughout the movie, there are a lot of quiet moments that are accentuated by the loud ones.
The thing about this film that I found most impressive is the fact that the movie is done in entirely one shot. The only exception to this is the part when the main character, played by MacKray, is knocked out while in a gunfight with a German soldier. The remainder of ‘1917,’ however, is done entirely in one shot. Not only is it stunning for that reason, but the movie has other visually stunning moments involving the music.
The film has a scene that takes place after the fight with the German soldier in a destroyed town, and the scene itself is a marvel. Simply put, the lighting for the scene is done masterfully through the use of flares. On top of that, the score for the scene is epic, yet eerie to reflect the fear in the main character and the importance of the mission he is on. Not long after that seen, we get to see another scene where he finds the battalion he is searching for in the woods and due to the music, we get to feel the same relief that he did in that moment. All of these things come together to give us an emotionally impactful movie that has us watching at the edge of our seats to see what happens next. I, simply put, loved the movie, and I hope others who saw it do too. If you haven’t seen it, then go watch it immediately.
Recently, DC put out a trailer for their newest DC Dark film, ‘Apokolips War.’ This movie is the newest in their line of rated R animated films that they have been working on. A majority of the animated films that they put out generally tell their own individual stories, but some of the newer ones have continuity. At the end of the most recent, ‘Reign of the Supermen,’ a fight was teased with the villain, Darkseid. The company promises that this will be the film that easily has the largest cast of DC characters across all of their films thus far.
Of course, with a cast of this size, the villains will have to be pretty strong in order to take them on. This leads to a swarm of Doomsday Parademons being used by Darkseid as an army. Highlighted in the description is Constantine, Superman, and Raven as the triumvirate that must put together the team that will save the world. Needless to say, this film is one that fans of these films will absolutely not want to miss.
‘Apokolips War’ is billed as the grandest of all of the films yet by gathering all of the character’s from the universe’s run thus far. After this film has released, there is no telling as to whether the universe will continue with its continuity, or if they will simply reboot the series again in some new animated venture. Of course, one of the other options is that the films become standalone films again. No matter what comes after this, the animated DC films, especially the Dark ones, are doing very well and have been very well received. So, it is safe to assume that this upcoming film will be one to remember.
J.J. Abrams is known for a number of different movies in all sorts of different roles including producing, writing and directing. He is responsible for the creation of shows such as Lost and Fringe, producing the Cloverfield series, and directing movies such as Star Trek, Super 8, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now, he is set to produce a new film through his Bad Robot Production company. This movie is known as ‘The Pinkerton.’
There have been discussions between J.J. Abrams and Co. and Warner Bros. regarding work on films and new television shows. In particular they have been discussing media for the Justice League Dark Comic series. One movie that ended up on the itinerary was the previously mentioned ‘The Pinkerton.’ Not much is known about the movie thus far other than the fact it is a Supernatural Western Thriller film.
‘The Pinkerton’ has been described by those making it as a supernatural revenge thriller. The script for the film was written by Dan Casey who did the rewrite for the Abrams-produced 10 Cloverfield Lane. Obviously, based off of name alone, the script is based off of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency of the same name. The agency, founded by Allan Pinkerton in 1850, did jobs for various corporations in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Of the jobs they did, some of those jobs were respectable ventures while others were not so respectable.
